Republic Day Celebrations in India

Republic day of India is celebrated on 26th January every year to honor the Constitution of India as it came into force on the same day in the year 1950. Republic day Celebrations is one of India’s most important national events. It is one of the three national holidays in India. On this day Government of India Act, 1935 had been converted into governing document of the India. The day is declared as the national holiday by the Indian Government.

After gaining freedom from the British rule on August 15, 1947, India had not any formal constitution even after the freedom. The Indian constitutions officially came into force on 26 January 1950. 26th January is celebrated as republic day to mark the glorious event of India becoming a sovereign republic. Republic day Celebrations brings the enjoyment and spirit of freedom.

A grand parade is held in New Delhi and kick off with the arrival of president of India, escorted by a pose of bodyguards on horses. Parade begins at the Raisina Hill in the neighborhood of the Rashtrapati Bhawan and passes along the Rajpath ending at India Gate. The Prime Minister of India lays a wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate to pay homage to soldiers who sacrifices their lives for country. The republic day parade takes place along Rajpath, Delhi.

Many events and programs are organized to celebrate this big day of the nation. Military Parades are held in national capital and also in state capitals. Traditional dance troupes from different states of the country and representatives of the India Army, Navy and Air force take parts in the parades.

The best part of the parade is the ‘camelry’ of the Border Security Forces which acts like a show stopper in the parade. To protect and guard the frontiers of Gujarat and Rajasthan, 1200 camels are trained by the BSF in Jodhpur.

On this day awards and medals of bravery are given to the armed forces and also to the civilians. School children participate in the patriotic programs like singing dancing. There is also a showcase of motorcycle rides by the armed forces personnel. The event also conclude with a “fly past” by the Indian Air Force, that includes fighter planes of flying past the dais, symbolically saluting the president. It leaves marks of smoke in the colors of the Indian flag.

All celebrations and events of this day are colorful and joyful and also provide opportunity for children to showcase their costumes and cultural and dancing skills.

Three divisions of the armed forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force) led the grand parade of republic day that showcase their strength. Different Indian States represented by a different float which shows the unity in diversity of India and highlight an aspect of different culture of Indian states.
