Makar Saknranti Celebrations in India: Makar Sankranti is a pious Hindu harvest festival that is celebrated in all parts of India and Nepal with cultural variations. The festival is said to be a mark of the beginning of the spring season in a traditional manner. The festival is mainly celebrated on 14th of January every year, with some mere exceptions of it being celebrated on either 13th or 15th January.

The festival is celebrated on the 1st of Magh according to the Hindu Solar Calendar for celebrating the happiness of getting new crops for farmers. The end of the winter solace is also marked by Makar Sankranti. It is believed that it is celebrated when sun moves into the Capricorn zodiac known as Makara in Sanskrit. Hence, the name Makar Sankranti has been derived where ‘Makar’ stands for Capricorn and ‘Sankranti’ stands for the movement of sun from one zodiac sign into another.

The holy festival also marks the end of inauspicious phase and beginning of the auspicious phase in Indian culture and is called as the ‘holy phase of transition’. Makar Sankranti is celebrated with different rituals and customs in different parts of Nepal and India.
