When Is Pongal: In South India, Pongal is a very important festival because it is associated with the harvest of crops. It is a very popular and important Hindu festival that is celebrated for four days in Tamil Nadu. Pongal is a pious festival of thanking nature and almighty for their blessings in the form of crops. Pongal derived its name from a Tamil word that means ‘to boil’ and is celebrated in the month of Thai.

Pongal is generally celebrated in the month January according to the solar calendar. It is celebrated from 13th of January to 16th of January and only sometimes from 14th of January to 17th January. The pious festival corresponds to the last day of the Tamil month Maargazhi to the third day of the Tamil month Thai.

The festival of Pongal marks the season of peace, harvest and happiness. There is a great zest and fervor seen in people of South India to celebrate this festival. The festival is said to be celebrated when the sun enters the Makara Rashi or the Tropic of Capricorn from the Tropic of Cancer. This is the time when sun begins its six month journey to the North Pole.

The festival is said to mark the end of the winter solace and beginning of the spring season. The time of Makar Sankranti or Pongal is believed is believed to be very pious and festive. People also believe it to be the first of the Hindu New Year. So for Hindus it is also celebrated as the New Year.

According to the Georgian calendar, the celebrations of Pongal are done on a fixed date i.e. 14th January. Pongal is celebrated for four continuous days and its celebrations begin on the last day of Tamil month of Maargazhi (December-January) and lasting up to the third day of Thai. From this day onwards, the nights start shortening and the days start lengthening.

2016: 14th January, 2016 to 17th January, 2016

2017: 13th January, 2016 to 16th January, 2016

2018: 13th January, 2016 to 16th January, 2016
